Engaging the Public in Pandemic Flu Planning

Program Description:
Public health professionals responsible for pandemic flu planning are working at a distinct disadvantage. While the public is the object of their concern, strategies and plans are being developed without directly involving the public. Building on findings from the Redefining Readiness study and a new community engagement process in the four Redefining Readiness demonstration sites, Dr. Lasker will show how the public's knowledge and perspectives can help public health professionals deal with some of their most vexing challenges.

Albany area viewers are also invited to attend a post-broadcast discussion with the speaker at the UAlbany School of Public Health from 12-1:30 p.m.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of the presentation, the participants will be able to:

1. Recognize that public health agencies cannot plan for pandemics on their own.
2. Identify an effective model for involving the public in pandemic planning.
3. Describe the concept of protective home isolation and the challenges associated with it.
4. List steps public health agencies can take to make protective home isolation feasible and effective.
