From Teachers to Leaders: In Crisis

Program Description:
This program will address key skills needed to prevent, respond, and intervene in the event of emergencies in school environments. Concepts including interagency communication, surveillance, risk communication, and crisis intervention will be covered. Dr. Samson will share lessons learned during a Hurricane-Charley-related school disaster involving the destruction of six schools and displacement of 6,000 students in Charlotte County, FL in 2004.

Roseann Samson, Ed.D., Assistant Superintendent, Charlotte County Public Schools - Florida
Objectives:
At the conclusion of the presentation, the participants will be able to:
- Share valuable lessons learned by Charlotte County Florida School District administrators having dealt directly with a serious natural disaster
- Understand the various types of public health threats that may impact schools (e.g., natural disasters, disease outbreaks, terrorism)
- Discuss the potential role of public health in a disaster affecting a school population
- Describe key partners essential to school emergency planning and response.
