BFGR 2015: Breastfeeding and the Workplace: Success Takes a Team

Identify at least 3 steps that providers (physicians, nurses, child care providers, WIC, etc.) can take to support a mother’s breastfeeding in the workplace;
List at least 3 employer solutions for supporting breastfeeding mothers working in non-office settings;
Name at least 3 resources to facilitate and strengthen supportive practices that enable women to breastfeed successfully after returning to work.

As a result of this educational activity, I have increased and enhanced my knowledge and competence on: *
“Despite the fact that the NYS law has been in place for some time, Not all businesses are aware of the laws or of solutions for how to comply. In addition, research in NY has also found that many mothers are also not aware of their rights. Since assisting moms who wish to continue to breastfeed when they return to work has such well-proven public health benefits to both the mom and the child, this law provides a critical piece of leverage and opportunities for public health officials, breastfeeding advocates, and providers to make sure moms now their rights and have resources to help them make it work. While it is critical to educate employers and moms about the law, it is also critically important that health care providers understand their critical role as catalysts, facilitators and support systems for the employers and their employees who wish to continue breastfeeding by expressing milk when they go back to work.”
