As a result of this educational activity, I have increased and enhanced my knowledge and competence on: *
“In New York State, more than 90 infants die each year due to sleep related causes and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) – those infant deaths for which no true cause can be determined after extensive study. Infant mortality due to unsafe sleep and SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants between one month and one year of age, with most deaths occurring when a baby is between two and four months of age. The NYS Division of Family Health has made Infant Safe Sleep one of its priorities for 2016. Through participation in the national Infant Mortality Collaborative Improvement and Innovation Network (IM-CoINN), NYS is focusing on a unified message about safe sleep, and is encouraging hospitals to model safe sleep behaviors. New York State is also encouraging communities to improve the operationalization and effectiveness of safe sleep education. This program will review the current American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations on infant safe sleep and discuss the barriers to safe sleep behaviors and the physiological perspective of safe sleep.”
